以下是Deny, Refuse, Reject, Decline 的粗略意思及用法, 大致意思拒絕。由於英文用法太廣, 此例只供基本參考, 有些情況用不同的詞也有同樣意思。
Deny : 一般用作否認, 有時用於拒絕做一些動作
I do not deny that is a serious blow.
我不否認那是嚴重的一擊。
You wouldn't deny an old man that small favour .
你不會拒絕一個老人小小的請求。
Refuse : 拒絕 (多用於表示不接受提議)
From then on he refused to talk about it .
從那以後他就不再談那件事了。
It was wise of you to refuse his offer .
你拒絕他的提議是明智的。
Reject : 拒絕 (多用於不同意, 不接受建議) 亦可用作退掉, 等棄, 嘔吐, (身體)排斥。名詞可作被丟棄品。
Had i been accepted or rejected ?
到底我被錄用了，還是被回絕了？
She knew she should reject him, and couldn't help her curiosity.
她知道她可以拒絕他, 卻止不住她的好奇心。
Decline : 拒絕 (多用於正式場合) 亦用於下降, 衰落等
The number of fish in the ocean is steadily declining.
海洋裡, 魚的數量穩定地下降。
She declined the offer from City College.
她拒絶了城市學院的錄取。
